       abstract = {The chapter presents the design, implementation and testing of the monitoring solution created for integration with a workflow execution platform. The monitoring solution is a key for modeling and performance analysis of Grid systems considered as a networking and collaborative systems. The monitoring solution constantly checks the system evolution in order to facilitate performance tuning and improvement. The novelty of the work presented in this chapter is the improvement of distributed application obtained using the real-time information to compute estimates of runtime which are used to improve scheduling. Monitoring is accomplished at application level, by monitoring each job from each workflow and at system level, by aggregating state information from each processing node. The scheduling performance in distributed systems can be improved through better runtime estimation and the error detection can automatically detect several types of errors.},

       abstract = {This chapter presents an adaptive intrusion detection system for distributed environments dedicated to developing agent-based applications. We propose a scalable, flexible and reactive agent based architecture and a lightweight genetic algorithm that recognizes the intruders in an adaptive and automatic way. Our approach is based on monitoring the level of physical resources usage and implies the detection of those agents that manifest an abusive behavior.        abstract = {This chapter presents a fault tolerant framework for the applications scheduling in large scale distributed systems (LSDS). Due to the specific characteristics and requirements of distributed systems, a good scheduling model should be dynamic. More specifically, it should adapt the scheduling decisions to resource state changes, which are commonly captured through monitoring. The scheduler and the monitor are two important middleware pieces that correlate their actions to ensure the high performance execution of distributed applications. The chapter presents and analyses agent based architecture for scheduling in large scale distributed systems. Then the user and resources management are presented. Optimization schemes for scheduling consider the near-optimal algorithm for distributed scheduling. The chapter presents the solution for scheduling optimization. The chapter covers and explains the fault tolerance cases for Grid environments and describes two possible scenarios for scheduling system.},

Dezvoltarea unor astfel de sisteme a condus la perfectionarea sistemelor de calcul si la aparitia unor tehnologii specifice. Sistemele de mari dimensiuni cu multe procesoare, clusterele de calculatoare ar fi câteva exemple de arhitecturi hardware dedicate aplicatiilor paralele si distribuite. Dar astfel de arhitecturi implica si neomogenitatea resurselor, comportarea nerobusta si dimensiuni din ce in ce mai considerabile in cazul sistemelor implicate. Tocmai de aceea dezvoltatorii de tehnologii pentru aceste arhitecturi au de infruntat o serie de provocari, iar solutiile oferite sunt nu putine la numar si ataca probleme din cele mai diverse. Tendinta actuala insa in dezvoltarea unor astfel de tehnologii consta in aducerea acestora la standarde deschise, acceptate de toate consortiile implicate in domeniu. Lucrarea prezinta tehnologiile Grid actuale pentru sistemele care reprezinta solutii viabile in dezvoltarea unor algoritmi dedicati prelucrarilor grafice (prelucrari de imagine) si numerice (aplicatii ce solicita un volum mare de date).},

     abstract = {The scheduling process in large scale distributed systems (LSDS) became more important due to increases in the number of users and applications. This paper presents a dynamic meta-scheduling architecture model for LSDS based on monitoring. The dynamic scheduling process tries to perform task allocation on the fly as the application executes. The monitoring has an important role in this process because it can offer a full view of nodes in distributed systems. The proposed architecture is an agent framework and contains a grid monitoring service, an execution service and a discovery service. The performance of the used monitoring system, MonALISA, is very important for dynamic scheduling because it ensures the real-time process. The experimental results validate our architecture and scheduling model.},

      abstract = {The use of discrete-event simulators in the design and development of distributed systems is appealing due to their efficiency and scalability. Their core abstractions of process and event map neatly to the components and interactions of modernday distributed systems and allow designing realistic simulation scenarios. MONARC, a multithreaded, process oriented simulation framework designed for modelling large scale distributed systems, allows the realistic simulation of a wide-range of distributed system technologies, with respect to their specific components and characteristics. In this paper we present an innovative solution to the problem of evaluating the dependability characteristic of distributed systems. Our solution is based on several proposed extensions to the simulation model of the MONARC simulation framework. These extensions refer to fault tolerance and system orchestration mechanisms being added in order to asses the reliability and availability of distributed systems. The extended simulation model includes the necessary components to describe various actual failure situations and provides the mechanisms to evaluate different strategies for replication and redundancy procedures, as well as security enforcement mechanisms.},

     abstract = {The paper presents the communication model for decentralised meta-scheduler in Grid environments. The proposed model is a distributed, fault-tolerant, adaptive and efficient one. It is designed as an agent's platform for Grid scheduling algorithms, which denote the decentralised architecture of this model. The platform contains two types of agents: one for resource management (Broker) and the other manages the users tasks requests (Agents). The paper describes the communication protocol between agents and the proposed structure for agents. It is presented the description of the scheduling algorithm in a logical flow of activities. The scheduler uses cluster schedulers like Condor or PBS, which denote the meta-scheduler approach. The agents' platform and the scheduling algorithm are tested in a cluster mode. The results highlight very good communication time and according with multiple users' requests.},

      abstract = {Satellite image processing is both data and computing intensive, and, therefore, it raises several difficulties or even impossibilities while being using one single computer. Moreover, the analysis and sharing of the huge amount of data provided daily by the space satellites is a major challenge for the remote sensing community. Recently, Gridbased platforms were built to address these issues. This paper presents a specialized Grid-based platform developed to enable remote sensing image processing for environmental problems, like preventing river floods or forest fires. Moreover, it exposes the novelty elements that distinguish it from other similar approaches.},

     abstract={Workflow management systems allow the development of complex applications at a higher level, by orchestrating functional components without handling the implementation details. Although a wide range of workflow engines are developed in enterprise environments, the open source engines available for scientific applications lack some functionalities or are too difficult to use for non-specialists. Moreover, the key middleware services in grids, like meta-schedulers, employ complex resource matching logic, but lack control flow orchestration capabilities. On the other hand, workflow engines suitably control process logic but are unaware of execution requirements of tasks. In this paper we present PEGAF, a workflow management platform for distributed systems targeted at scientific applications. Our platform provides features like an intuitive way to describe workflows and flexible fault tolerance support, while integrating both workflow orchestration and meta-scheduling. We validate our integrated platform within several test scenarios, outlining a significant performance increase flow orchestration solutions.},

     abstract={Complex applications are describing using work-flows. Execution of these workflows in Grid environments require optimized assignment of tasks on available resources according with different constrains. This paper presents a decentralized scheduling algorithm based on genetic algorithms for the problem of DAG scheduling. The genetic algorithm presents a powerful method for optimization and could consider multiple criteria in optimization process. Also, we describe in this paper the integration platform for the proposed algorithm in Grid systems. We make a comparative evaluation with other existing DAG scheduling solution: Cluster ready Children First, Earliest Time First, Highest Level First with Estimated Times, Improved Critical Path with Descendant Prediction) and Hybrid Remapper. We carry out our experiments using a simulation tool with various scheduling scenarios and with heterogeneous input tasks and computation resources. We present several experimental results that offer a support for near-optimal algorithm selection.},
